Sehenswertes in unserer Nähe

Idyll around Barigau

Barigau is nestling between gentle meadows and hills. Here you still have the possibility to enjoy the quietness of nature.

The Barigau tower ("Der Barigauer Turm")

The Barigau tower is located in 666 m height over sea level, with a wide outlook over the Thuringian countryside. You can have a view into the Rinne valley, the Schwarzatal, as well as the Rennsteig region in the area of Masserberg. In the Barigau tower you can find a restaurant that offers Thuringian plain fare.

The Oberweissbach mountain railway ("Die Oberweißbacher Bergbahn")

The Oberweissbach mountain railway is the steepest standard gauge railway in the world. It was built between 1919 and 1923. The valley station is located in Obstfelderschmiede, directly in the Schwarzatal. It gets over an altitude difference of 323 m. The route is 1387,8 m long and the ride lasts 18 minutes. The mountain station is located in Lichtenhain. From there a rail car then drives to Oberweißbach and Cursdorf.
You can have a very nice view of the mountain railway from the little mountain village of Mankenbach.

The Emperor Hall of Castle Schwarzburg

The Schwarzburg was built on a prang. It burned down many times.
Castle Schwarzburg was the summer and hunt domicile of the electors of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. The newly built emperor hall is today used as a museum. Concerts and performances are taking place in the park in front of the emperor hall.

The Kickelhahn with look-out

The 861 m high crest of the Kickelhahn is the local mountain of the city of Ilmenau. The 24 m high look-out is located at this height of the mountain - from there you can have a wonderful look-out over the heights of the Thuringian Forest and its foreland.
Goethe enjoyed the beauty of the mountain and used to spend much time there.
Hungry hikers can strengthen themselves in the guesthouse of the mountain next to the tower.

The Erfurter Cathedral

The monumentally construction group of the cathedral and the St. Severi Church, that is dominating the "cathedral square", is one of the most immense constructions of the mediaeval times on German ground. The formation can be backtracked until the year 742. Fundamental building elements come from the 12th, 14th and 15th century.
The "cathedral square" offers a unique ensemble of two big Gothic churches with Romanic extravaganzas such as the Madonna (1154), the "Wolframleuchter" (1160), the "Barockaltar" (1697), the "Chorgestühl" (choir stalls) (1350), Gothic windows (1380-1420), 2 organs from the company Schuke from Potsdam and the big bell "Gloriosa" from 1497 with a weight of 11.450 kg. ??
